Barbados cruise port guide: what to do in your hours ashore
Ships berth at the Bridgetown Cruise Terminal in the Deep Water Harbour, about 1.5 km north of the city centre. The terminal itself has shops and a taxi stand. Historic Bridgetown and the calm beaches of Carlisle Bay are a short ride away; the rugged east coast and the rum estates of the north make for a longer island tour. Traffic drives on the left.

Getting around from the terminal
- Walk: From the terminal to the Careenage and Parliament is roughly 20–30 minutes on foot along the harbour road. It is flat but hot, with little shade.
- Taxi: Taxis wait outside the terminal. They have no meters; fares are set by the government per route. Agree the price, and whether it is in Barbados or US dollars, before you set off. being verified
- Bus: Blue government buses, yellow private minibuses and white "ZR" route vans all charge the same flat fare. West-coast routes leave from the Princess Alice terminal, south and east routes from Fairchild Street. Have exact change in Barbados dollars. being verified
- Catamaran pick-up: Many snorkel and party catamarans collect cruise guests from the terminal or the Careenage, so you do not need a taxi for those. being verified

Money: Barbados dollar (BBD), fixed at 2 per US dollar. US dollars and cards are widely accepted; prices are often quoted in Barbados dollars, so ask which one is meant.
Language: English; Bajan Creole is spoken among locals.
Opening hours
Bridgetown shops are generally open Monday to Friday from about 8:30 to 16:30, and on Saturday morning until about 13:00. The terminal shops follow the ships.
On Sundays nearly all shops in Bridgetown are closed. The shops in the cruise terminal and most beach bars open when a ship is in.
Weather
Daytime highs of 29–31°C all year. Warm all year with a cooling trade wind; June to November is hurricane season and the wettest months, though direct hits on Barbados are rare.

The neo-Gothic Parliament Buildings, National Heroes Square and the Careenage with Chamberlain Bridge, part of the UNESCO-listed old town. Broad Street has the department stores; Cheapside market is near the Princess Alice bus terminal.

The visitor centre of the old rum brand is on the Spring Garden Highway, minutes from the ship. Tours explain the blending and end with a tasting. Book a time slot, especially on busy days.

The house where the young George Washington stayed in 1751, beside the Garrison Savannah parade ground and racetrack. Small museum and tunnels under the house.

Carlisle Bay beaches
Browne's Beach and Pebbles Beach line a sheltered bay just south of town, with calm, clear water and beach bars renting loungers. The easiest swim from the ship.

Harrison's Cave
An electric tram takes you through a limestone cave with stalactites, streams and pools in the middle of the island. Often combined with a short island tour.

Sail along the west coast to swim with green and hawksbill turtles, then snorkel over the shallow wrecks in Carlisle Bay. Lunch and drinks are usually included. The most popular excursion in Barbados.

A cove of pink-tinted sand below cliffs on the south-east coast, with real Atlantic waves. Strong swimmers will enjoy it; families are better off at Carlisle Bay.

A 17th-century plantation house in the north with its own rum distillery and a heritage steam railway up to the view at Cherry Tree Hill. Far from the port; best on a guided tour or with a taxi that waits.

Carlisle Bay, with Browne's and Pebbles Beach, is about 10 minutes by taxi. Brighton Beach just north of the harbour is closer but less sheltered.

Mostly not. Bathsheba and the Atlantic side have strong currents and rough surf. Swim on the calm west and south coasts and enjoy the east coast from the shore.
