Ocho Rios cruise port guide: what to do in your hours ashore
Ocho Rios has two cruise berths on the same bay. The main Cruise Ship Pier sits next to Island Village and Turtle Beach, a few minutes on foot from the town centre; Reynolds Pier, the old bauxite pier a little further west, is used when a second ship is in. Dunn's River Falls and Mystic Mountain are only about ten minutes away by taxi, which is why most passengers here plan around waterfalls and the green hills of St Ann rather than a long beach day.

Getting around from the pier
- Walk: From the main pier you walk straight into Island Village, Turtle Beach and the craft market. From Reynolds Pier it is about 10 minutes east along Main Street to the centre.
- Taxi: Use licensed JUTA taxis from the rank inside the port area, not drivers who approach you on the street. Fares are not metered: agree the price, in which currency, and the pick-up time before you leave.
- Route taxi / bus: Shared route taxis run along the coast road towards St Ann's Bay and Oracabessa. Very cheap but crowded and not geared to visitors with a fixed all-aboard time. being verified
- Private driver: Many JUTA drivers hire out by the half or full day for Nine Mile or Blue Hole. Settle the total price and the return time up front, and pay at the end. being verified
Money and language
Money: Jamaican dollar (JMD). US dollars are taken at the pier, at attractions and by most taxi drivers, but change usually comes back in Jamaican dollars and the rate floats, so small US bills help.
Language: English is the official language; most Jamaicans also speak Patois among themselves.
Opening hours
Shops in town generally open Monday to Saturday from about 9:00 to 17:00. Attractions such as Dunn's River and Mystic Mountain open daily, with longer hours on ship days.
On Sundays many local shops in town stay closed, but Island Village, the craft market stalls and the main attractions usually open when a cruise ship is in.
Weather
Daytime highs of 29–32°C all year. Hot and humid all year; showers are most likely in May and from September to November, and the hurricane season runs June to November.
Things to do
Town
Ocho Rios town and craft market
Main Street, local jerk stands and the craft market are within walking distance of the main pier. Vendors can be very persistent: a firm, friendly "no thanks" works.
Beach
Turtle Beach and Island Villagebeing verified
The easiest option: Island Village with its shops and Margaritaville sits at the pier gate, and Turtle Beach curves along the bay right beside it. Fine for a swim and a drink if you do not want to ride anywhere.
Nature
Konoko Falls and gardensbeing verified
Smaller falls and landscaped gardens in the hills just above town. Calmer than Dunn's River and a good choice for families or anyone who prefers looking at a waterfall to climbing one.
Water
Dolphin Covebeing verified
Dolphin swims and encounters in a cove next to Dunn's River Falls. Programmes are timed and fill up on ship days, so book ahead rather than turning up.
Nature
Dunn's River Falls
Jamaica's best-known waterfall, where you climb the terraced limestone cascades from the beach upward in a hand-holding chain led by a guide. Wear water shoes and expect crowds when two ships are in; there is an entry fee and guides expect a tip.
Tour
Mystic Mountain
A chairlift lifts you over the rainforest to a hilltop park with a Jamaican bobsled ride, ziplines and views back over the bay and your ship. Combines easily with Dunn's River, just down the road.
Nature
Blue Hole and Island Gully Fallsbeing verified
Turquoise pools inland in St Mary where local guides help you jump, swim and scramble up the river. The last stretch of road is rough; go with a tour or a JUTA driver who waits for you.
Water
Catamaran and snorkelbeing verified
Sailing trips along the coast with a snorkel stop on the reef, often combined with a landing at Dunn's River so you skip the road. Most operators pick up close to the pier.
Tour
Bob Marley's Nine Milebeing verified
The village in the St Ann hills where Bob Marley was born and is buried, with a guided visit of his childhood home and mausoleum. The road is narrow and winding, so only do this on a long port day and with a tour that guarantees the return.
Frequently asked questions
Can you walk from the Ocho Rios cruise pier to Dunn's River Falls?
Not really. The falls are about 3 km west along a busy coast road without a proper footpath. A JUTA taxi or a tour takes about 10 minutes.
Do I need Jamaican dollars in Ocho Rios?
Not for a port day. Taxis, attractions and Island Village take US dollars and cards; carry small US bills for tips and market stalls, and expect change in Jamaican dollars.
Which pier will my ship use in Ocho Rios?
The main Cruise Ship Pier beside Island Village is used first. When a second ship is in, one berths at Reynolds Pier to the west, about a 10-minute walk from the centre. Tours and taxis pick up at both.
Is Ocho Rios safe for cruise passengers?
The port area, Island Village and the main attractions are busy and generally safe by day. Use licensed JUTA taxis, agree fares first, decline unofficial guides, and keep valuables out of sight in town.
Ocho Rios cruise traffic: 577,000 cruise passengers in 2024 (Port Authority of Jamaica); Jamaica's three cruise ports together handled about 1.5 million.
