Puerto Plata cruise port: what to do in 4 hours
Your ship is in port for 4 hours or so? Once you subtract getting off, the way back and a margin before all aboard, you have roughly 2 to 3 hours to enjoy. This is what a 4-hour stop makes possible.
Best use of 4 hours
- Victorian centre and Calle de las Sombrillas (1.5 h, at the terminal): Parque Central with its gazebo and cathedral, wooden gingerbread houses, and the side street hung with colourful umbrellas. Easy to do on your own from Taino Bay.
- Fortaleza San Felipe and the Malecón (1.5 h, at the terminal): A compact 16th-century fort on the point, with a small museum and cannons facing the sea, next to the harbour lighthouse. The seafront Malecón runs east from here.
- Brugal rum visitor centre (1.5 h, 10 min away): A short visit to the bottling plant of the best-known Dominican rum, east of the centre, with a tasting at the end. Often included in city tours.
- Playa Dorada (3.5 h, 15 min away): The long, golden beach in front of the all-inclusive resort complex east of town. Some resorts sell day passes; the public sections have vendors and beach bars.
- Ocean World at Cofresí (4 h, 15 min away): Marine park on the coast west of town with dolphin, sea lion and shark programmes; the beach at Cofresí is next door. From Amber Cove it is only a few minutes away.
Also fits, with time to spare
Amber Museum (1 h), Taino Bay port pool and beach area (1 h). You could combine two of these.
