Puerto Plata cruise port: what to do in 6 hours
Your ship is in port for 6 hours or so? Once you subtract getting off, the way back and a margin before all aboard, you have roughly 4 to 5 hours to enjoy. This is what a 6-hour stop makes possible.
Best use of 6 hours
- Playa Dorada (3.5 h, 15 min away): The long, golden beach in front of the all-inclusive resort complex east of town. Some resorts sell day passes; the public sections have vendors and beach bars.
- Ocean World at Cofresí (4 h, 15 min away): Marine park on the coast west of town with dolphin, sea lion and shark programmes; the beach at Cofresí is next door. From Amber Cove it is only a few minutes away.
- Sosúa beach (4.5 h, 30 min away): A sheltered bay with calm water, snorkelling on the reefs at either end and a row of bars and stalls behind the sand. Expect persistent vendors; a firm no works.
- 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua (5 h, 35 min away): Climb, jump and slide down a chain of limestone waterfalls in the hills inland, always with a guide, helmet and life jacket. You will get completely wet; most operators let cruise passengers do the lower falls if time is short.
Also fits, with time to spare
Amber Museum (1 h), Taino Bay port pool and beach area (1 h), Victorian centre and Calle de las Sombrillas (1.5 h), Fortaleza San Felipe and the Malecón (1.5 h), Brugal rum visitor centre (1.5 h). You could combine two of these.
