Costa Maya cruise port: what to do in 6 hours
Your ship is in port for 6 hours or so? Once you subtract getting off, the way back and a margin before all aboard, you have roughly 4 to 5 hours to enjoy. This is what a 6-hour stop makes possible.
Best use of 6 hours
- ATV or jungle buggy tour (3.5 h, 15 min away): Off-road rides on dirt tracks through the coastal scrub and mangroves near the port, often combined with a beach stop. Dusty and bumpy; closed shoes recommended.
- Beach club day in Mahahual (4 h, 10 min away): Several beach bars along the seafront offer loungers and umbrellas if you buy food and drinks, some with a set minimum spend. Further south the beach gets quieter. Seaweed (sargassum) can pile up here in summer.
- Chacchoben Maya ruins (4.5 h, 60 min away): Temples and plazas in the forest, about an hour inland on good roads. Shaded and less crowded than the famous sites further north, but limited to the main paths. Almost everyone goes with an organised tour.
Also fits, with time to spare
Port village and pools (1.5 h), Mahahual seafront (3 h), Reef snorkelling off Mahahual (3 h). You could combine two of these.
