Ocho Rios cruise port: what to do in 6 hours
Your ship is in port for 6 hours or so? Once you subtract getting off, the way back and a margin before all aboard, you have roughly 4 to 5 hours to enjoy. This is what a 6-hour stop makes possible.
Best use of 6 hours
- Dunn's River Falls (3.5 h, 10 min away): Jamaica's best-known waterfall, where you climb the terraced limestone cascades from the beach upward in a hand-holding chain led by a guide. Wear water shoes and expect crowds when two ships are in; there is an entry fee and guides expect a tip.
- Mystic Mountain (3.5 h, 10 min away): A chairlift lifts you over the rainforest to a hilltop park with a Jamaican bobsled ride, ziplines and views back over the bay and your ship. Combines easily with Dunn's River, just down the road.
- Blue Hole and Island Gully Falls (4 h, 30 min away): Turquoise pools inland in St Mary where local guides help you jump, swim and scramble up the river. The last stretch of road is rough; go with a tour or a JUTA driver who waits for you.
- Catamaran and snorkel (4 h, at the pier): Sailing trips along the coast with a snorkel stop on the reef, often combined with a landing at Dunn's River so you skip the road. Most operators pick up close to the pier.
- Bob Marley's Nine Mile (6 h, 75 min away): The village in the St Ann hills where Bob Marley was born and is buried, with a guided visit of his childhood home and mausoleum. The road is narrow and winding, so only do this on a long port day and with a tour that guarantees the return.
Also fits, with time to spare
Ocho Rios town and craft market (1.5 h), Turtle Beach and Island Village (2 h), Konoko Falls and gardens (2.5 h), Dolphin Cove (3 h). You could combine two of these.
